HISTORY
Founded on Innovation

1979 Albany International established a small venture group.
1984 Gates Corporation purchased and expanded this group. The new company -- Gates Formed-Fibre Products, Inc. -- transformed the automotive trunk carpet business by introducing CON-FORM®, a moldable felt substrate, and other technical textiles.
1989 Gates began manufacturing polyester staple fiber for its own use and for others in the North American textile industry.
1990's Gates invented TARA-LOCK®, a highly wear-resistant veloured nonwoven that revolutionized the interior trim market segment and continues to be a popular material choice among automotive OEMs.

Gates also developed and patented CON-FORM®II, providing the automotive industry with an improved substrate that achieves stiffer parts with less weight while exhibiting superior thermal and dimensional stability.

2003 Morgenthaler Partners, a leading middle-market buyout firm, acquired Gates Formed-Fibre Products and renamed it Formed Fiber Technologies, Inc.   FFT serves as a platform for building the leading, one-stop fiber product and systems supplier to automotive and non-automotive markets.
2003 Formed Fiber Technologies acquired Martin Color-Fi, the leading manufacturer of solution-dyed polyester staple fiber based in South Carolina.   In 2004, FFT expanded Color-Fi's product line to include polypropylene fiber.   This vertical integration assures FFT a reliable and cost-effective supply of raw materials.

ENVIRONMENT
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

FFT is committed to providing a healthy and safe workplace for our associates and to conducting our business in an environmentally responsible manner. Management of environmental protection is an integral aspect of our business operations and a responsibility of all managers in our facilities.

Our day-to-day operations tell a great environmental story. Each year, we recycle 12 million pounds of PET resin, the same kind of plastic commonly used for drink bottles.
We recycle the equivalent of
100 million 2-litre bottles
each year
PET bottles

Converting this large volume of recycled material into highly functional and attractive products is a significant contribution to protecting the environment we all share.

Imagine this journey:

The empty soda bottle left over from your lunch goes to a local collection center where it is crushed and baled before heading to a recycler where it is chopped into flakes, then washed and dried.

The plastic continues on to FFT, where it is converted into polyester staple fiber, then takes shape as nonwoven fabric and is shipped to automotive OEM's and converters.

Environmental Management

Our Maine and Ohio plants are certified ISO 14001, a globally recognized standard for environmental management systems.

ISO 14001 requires that a facility undergo a rigorous internal process to develop, implement, and maintain an environmental management system.

The focus and discipline of third-party certification to the Environmental Management System is the right thing for our community, employees and our business.

Certification substantiates our commitment to the environment, but it also affirms our ongoing program to continually improve performance.

FFT Environmental Policy

  • We are committed to complying with all relevant environmenatl regulations and other statutory requirements.
